I grew up in the rural part of a small town in Appalachia. I was raised in geographical Eden but didn’t realize it until I left. I was given every gift, every opportunity, every jewel but I didn’t know kindness or softness until my adulthood. My art is most authentic when it reflects my own battle in my understanding of waste and value. What does it mean to value someone or something in the environment around you? Does an object’s perceived value undulate in the context of time and its position in space? Is there a way to value an object without placing yourself, as a viewer, in a particular space and time? If there is topography in the pursuit of sensing the environment around you, where do you reside on that mountain?
