An homage to one of Japan’s ancient rock carvings. This 4×6-inch wall piece is hand-sculpted in clay, blended with iron oxides to echo the volcanic hyaloclastite stone of Fugoppe Cave in Hokkaido. The original petroglyph, carved nearly two millennia ago, rises from soft volcanic rock—its winged form a timeless symbol of spirit and story. Created in the Late Jōmon or Epi-Jōmon period, these images spoke to the lives, beliefs, and cosmology of the people who carved them. Minimal yet rich in texture, this piece brings the presence of an ancient hand into the modern space. Details: Size: 4×6 inches (5x7 in frame) Materials: Hand-mixed clay with natural iron oxides Surface inspired by hyaloclastite volcanic rock Hanging hardware included Why You’ll Love It: A miniature tribute to rare Jōmon-era rock art Earthy, authentic texture inspired by the original cave wall Perfect for cultural enthusiasts, art collectors, or lovers of ancient design

FAQ

Is this safe for... ?

KIDS: NO.

ANIMALS: NO.

Handle slowly and carefully. There are sharp fragments in this product.

What is the clay made of?

The clay is made with a blend of translucent Sculpey III, iron oxides for pigmentation, and natural pigmented fragments that were hand foraged and processed.

How do I sculpt with it?

Handle slowly and carefully. There are sharp fragments within.

Hand mix the polymer after unpackaging to rewarm the clay and aid in pliability.

To maximize the amount of fragments visible in your piece, roll the clay thin to get the most surface area possible. Use other medium beneath for maximum product use.

Shape your piece normally. Pay careful attention to the surface of your piece. Push the clay around the fragments at the surface of your clay to create the texture you'd like to see.

How do I fire it?

Same instructions as Sculpey III.

275 for 15 minutes per 1/4" thickness.

How do I seal it?

Sealing the clay helps hold the surface fragments in place after firing. I use a few layers of mod-podge for small pieces. For larger pieces, I apply UV resin then mod-podge.
